Let’s delve deeper into how the imprints of childhood shape our adult lives. It’s often said that we enter the world with only two primal fears: falling and loud noises. Every other fear, every anxious tremor, every limiting belief is a learned response, absorbed as we navigate our early years.

In our ancestral past, this rapid learning of what to fear was crucial for survival. We instinctively watched our parents and community, quickly identifying threats to avoid. Fear kept us safe from predators. However, in our modern world, this ingrained fear response often manifests as persistent anxiety, a feeling that can feel overwhelmingly unhelpful when the saber-toothed tigers are long gone. This constant state of alert can significantly impact our ability to thrive, creating challenges in our work, our relationships, and our overall well-being.

Roots of Anxiety

Think about it: children are like sponges, constantly absorbing information about their environment, especially from their primary caregivers. If a child regularly witnesses a parent’s anxiety, they may unconsciously internalize the belief that the world is inherently unsafe. This early programming can lay the foundation for their own struggles with anxiety later in life.

While anxiety is a natural and necessary response to genuine danger – triggering the fight-or-flight response with increased heart rate and heightened senses – it becomes problematic when it’s excessive or triggered inappropriately. Interestingly, this very fight-or-flight response can even weaken our immune system over time, making us more susceptible to illness.

The good news is that because anxiety is a learned response, it can often be unlearned. Hypnotherapy offers a powerful pathway to do just that. Until around the age of seven, a child’s brain operates predominantly in a theta brainwave state – a state of deep learning, vivid visualization, and heightened suggestibility, similar to the state accessed during hypnosis. This “imprint period” is when we learn fundamental skills like walking and talking, and it’s also when our foundational reactions to the world are being formed.

Hypnotherapy gently guides us back to a similar state, allowing us to access and update these early learnings. It’s not sleep, but rather a focused state of relaxation within the REM sleep cycle, where we can more readily process emotions and reframe experiences. Through hypnotherapy, we can directly address the root causes of anxiety, desensitize ourselves to triggers, and cultivate more positive and adaptive responses. Fractionation, the process of deepening the hypnotic state through repeated experience, can further enhance relaxation and reduce underlying anxiety. Moreover, hypnotherapy provides tools to process trauma, rewrite negative self-narratives, and rehearse healthier responses to anxiety-provoking situations.

When we heal the wounds of our own childhood, we become more secure and emotionally available in our adult relationships. We are less likely to project our past hurts onto our partners or children.
